For Belle Plaine—the stage name of Melanie Berglund—music is a life obligation. Everything is wrapped up in it, including her bassist husband—Blake Berglund—who supports all aspects of her career and with whom she co-writes on occasion. “My favourite part is getting on stage and singing, hanging with my band and travelling,” Belle shares. “I’m so lucky that my voice and my songs allow me to travel and that I get to share that experience with my band.”
Belle Plaine grew up in Fosston, Saskatchewan, a hamlet with the population of 45. Her early influences came from the family AM radio and years of classical voice training, which led her to pursue contemporary music in college. But the memories of her rural, country life have made their way into her song-writing, aiding in her strength of weaving stories and emotions with her incredible voice.
With a loyal following, Belle Plaine’s music has continued to flourish over the years. She has had the opportunity to perform at well-known festivals such as Small Halls on Prince Edward Island, Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion in Virginia and the Regina Folk Festival in her home province of Saskatchewan. When it comes to her fans, Belle hopes they find comfort and connection in her lyrics and sound. “I’m a care-giver at heart and performing is my method.” Above all, Belle hopes to practice honestly in all her music. “‘Is this honest, is this true?’ Are questions I’m always asking myself when I write.”
New to the Blundstone brand, Belle and her band mates were very excited to get their first pair. “There have been a lot of lovely prairie walks with Blake. We both love them. We’re hooked,” Belle shares of the comfortable boots. While Belle is itching to take her new kicks on the road, she shares that these past months have been good for the creative mind. “There’s always a silver lining.”
Her Blundstone Playlist Volume 4 contribution “Squared Up” is off her album Malice, Mercy, Grief + Wrath. The song explores the trials and tribulations of being a touring musician. “It felt like an easy fit for the playlist.” Belle shares that it was written in solidarity for a fellow musician working through the ins and outs of making a living in the industry. “It’s a song especially for those of us who are hustling without the support of managers or agents.”
